Hypnosis for Procrastination

How many times have you found yourself postponing an important task, even though completing the task would have so many benefits for you and your goals? Welcome to the world of procrastination.

Procrastination is that thing that makes us feel lazy, unmotivated, and disappointed. Sometimes it’s also the reason why we cannot reach our goals and dreams although they may be within reach!

Don’t worry, hypnotherapy can be just the right solution to your procrastination!

What is procrastination?

According to www.procrastination.com, procrastination is having a hard time persuading yourself to do the things that you should or would like to do. If you are procrastinating, you can find yourself doing irrelevant things instead of working on meaningful tasks.

Sometimes procrastination may feel like a lack of motivation, not being able to find time for important tasks, or lack of energy. You may find yourself saying things like “I am so busy, I just don’t have time” or “After completing all the other tasks, I feel tired”.

In other words, if you find that you are simply finding reasons not to accomplish an important or valuable task, you may actually be procrastinating.

Why does it happen?

There can be many reasons why someone procrastinates. Some of the most common reasons are:

·      Fear of failure

·      Fear of success

·      Depression

·      Anxiety

·      Unclear goals

·      Not seeing the value in the task

·      Irrelevant tasks

·      ADHD

·      Lack of self-efficacy

·      Perfectionism

·      Lack of energy

It’s important to note that some people procrastinate depending on the task and some people procrastinate chronically.

To understand the reason for your procrastination, first, you can work on having an awareness of the procrastination and notice when you are more likely to do it (or not do it depending on your perspective!). If you find that you procrastinate more when it comes to certain tasks, what you are avoiding is probably the task itself due to your subconscious associations about the task.

On the other hand, if you find that you procrastinate as a lifestyle, maybe the problem is deeper and the cause of the procrastination may require you to focus on your mental health.

How can hypnosis help with procrastination?

Let’s think about what hypnosis is for a second. Hypnosis is a subconscious therapy that helps tap into our internal resources, skills, and motivation. This definition of hypnosis can already explain how hypnotherapy can be helpful to overcome procrastination!

There are even more reasons why hypnotherapy can be helpful with procrastination. To name a few, hypnotherapy can help you understand why you are procrastinating, what motivates you and how to bring that motivation out in daily life.

Understanding the reason for the procrastination with hypnosis

During hypnosis, your subconscious mind is wide open. The subconscious mind is also where the reason for your procrastination may be suppressed.

With the help of your hypnotherapist, you can start to understand why you may be procrastinating in the first place. Have you had an earlier experience that resulted in failure? Or maybe what you are targeting to do is not really matching with your values. All the contributing reasons can be clarified during the discussion part of the session.

However, sometimes the reasons are not available to us within conscious thinking. This is when hypnosis becomes very powerful. During hypnosis, with regression techniques, or simply with relaxation, the reasons for your procrastination can emerge.

Releasing the mental blocks with hypnosis

Sometimes procrastination can be caused by depression or anxiety because the subconscious mind is filled with heavy emotions and the mind is actually focused on wellbeing rather than accomplishing goals. Even common emotions such as stress, tensions, guilt, fear, or grief can lead to procrastination. Think of these emotions as clouds on a rainy day, it will be hard to reach your inner motivation.

Hypnosis is a great tool to release suppressed emotions. Sometimes we even carry emotions from decades ago, without knowing that they affect us to this day. During hypnosis these emotions can resurface and be released more powerfully from the subconscious mind, eventually clearing the skies and allowing the inner motivation to rise.

Hypnosis can help with solidifying “Why’s”

As humans, we feel motivated when we see value in the things that we do. This is why having strong “why’s” really helps us accomplish anything!

When consulting with a hypnotherapist, usually one of the very first questions you will hear is “Why do you want to change?”. If you actually start to work with a hypnotherapist, you will get a chance to dive deeper and really tap into your inner motivation.

All the reasons why we decide on something or why we find something interesting are suppressed in the subconscious mind just like emotions. With the help of hypnosis, you can tap into your motivators and bring them to the surface, which allows you to feel motivated throughout your daily life!

Direct suggestions from a hypnotherapist can be very powerful

When you trust and start working with a hypnotherapist, you become more suggestible to them. Therefore, you are more likely to take in and allow their direct positive suggestions into your subconscious mind.

For example, if a friend tells you “You will be able to find your inner motivation to spend half-hour going for a walk every day”, it may not be very effective. However, when your hypnotherapist tells you the same affirmation during hypnosis, that becomes so much more powerful and actually, many people end up following this positive suggestion.

After you clearly define your goals and expectations to your hypnotherapist, your hypnotherapist will formulate positive suggestions that will benefit you and your goals. These may even sound simple like “You will find excitement and motivation to sit down and study.”

Can self-hypnosis help with procrastination?

Self-hypnosis is a very effective form of light hypnosis. Especially for things like increasing motivation and overcoming procrastination, self-hypnosis can be incredibly effective.

Self-hypnosis is a form of mind conditioning that feels very similar to meditation. When you tap into your subconscious mind with self-hypnosis, you can give yourself positive suggestions or use your imagination. Your imagination and your own words are actually the most powerful subconscious language.

There are two techniques you can use with self-hypnosis to overcome procrastination and increase motivation:

1-    Using positive suggestions, a.k.a affirmations:

In this first technique, you formulate your positive phrase beforehand. Make sure to state your phrase positively. You can repeat your phrase as many times as you wish. What matters here is triggering positive emotions. So take your time and repeat the sentence in your mind as much as you need. Your sentence may sound like “I feel motivated to do… every day”

2-    Using your imagination:

This one is my favorite. It’s simple yet very effective. Simply imagine yourself performing the task and completing it successfully. Get in touch with as many details as you can in your imagination. Again, the goal is to trigger positive emotions within.

Final words

No matter what the reason is, procrastination can be debilitating, and actually, you may feel stuck because of procrastination. If you feel like you are ready to move forward, or if you want to find that inner motivation, hypnotherapy can be a great option for you!
